Red Bird: Awards, Free Screening and Party

“Red Bird,” an award-winning locally produced short film, invites you to a complimentary screening at the AMC Cocowalk on Wednesday, November 8 th at 5:00 PM, followed by a happy hour at Apples Martini Bar & Lounge with $4 drinks, free buffet, Latin music and dancing.

This screening and party preludes the Crystal Reel Awards ceremony, presented by the Florida Motion Picture Television Association, where “Red Bird” will be recognized in five categories: Leading Actor (Mal Jones), Composer (Angelo Milli), Director of Photography (William Garcia), Production Design (Alejandra Huerta), and Director (Emilia Anguita).

“Red Bird” is a 24 min. narrative short produced entirely in Miami with local talent and sponsored by Sony Electronics, Eastman Kodak, Unique Producers Service, Cineworks Digital Studios, Sprockets Music, The Miami-Dade Mayor’s Office of Film and Entertainment, the City of Miami Film Office, and NALIP Florida, among others. Red Bird is Anguita’s first film in English, produced while she completed her MFA degree in Motion Pictures Screenwriting at the University of Miami.

Red Bird is a story of love and friendship between Louis, a WWII veteran who suffers from Alzheimer’s (Mal Jones) and Dana, a tormented young painter (Theadra Taylor) who rents a studio in Louis’ house. The film takes its title from one of its locations, the shopping center at the intersection between Red and Bird Roads.

Produced by Andromeda Productions, Red Bird premiered in April 2005 at the AMC Cocowalk followed by a reception party at the emblematic Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove. The film has participated in the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, the West Chester Film Festival, the Viña del Mar International Film Festival, and the South Florida Women’s International Film Festival, among others.

Red Bird has received several awards, including 3rd place for Short Subject at the Best of Florida/Made in Florida competition, an Artistic Honorable Mention at the 2006 Film & Video Awards Program of the Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archive Competition, and recently, the Board of Directors of the Florida Motion Picture Television Association Orlando Chapter announced that Red Bird will receive five Crystal Reel Awards.

The 17 th Annual Crystal Reel Awards honor outstanding achievement in the Motion Picture, Television, Audio Recording and Digital Media Industries in the State of Florida produced during 2005. We would like to invite you the screening of the film “Red Bird,” playing this Friday,
November 11th, Veteran’s Day, during the celebration of the 20th Fort Lauderdale International
Film Festival.

The film narrates an inspiring story of friendship and compassion, portraying the relationship
between Louis, a WWII veteran, (Mal Jones,) and Dana, (Theadra Taylor,) a young artist who
rents a studio in his house.

The Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum helped the producers, providing images to illustrate our
character's past as a glider pilot. This way, in the film Glen Grube represents our character as a
young man in uniform.

Mal Jones
, a WWII veteran, is an award-winning Floridian actor who has appeared in more
than 20 feature films throughout his career, including "The Truman Show" (Paramount),
"Cocoon II" and "Porky's II" (20th Century Fox.) In TV series, he played Cal Clayburn in "Miami
Vice" and Peterson, the unforgettable friend of the family in the MGM series "Flipper," among
many others.

We would like to invite all the Veterans in the South Florida area to attend the screening
in their Veterans Day celebration. We will make sure you enjoy the occasion!

Red Bird plays at FLIFF to honor Veterans in their day.

Red Bird, a local independent film awarded with the third place of Short Subjects at the “Best of Florida, Made in Florida” competition, will be playing this Friday, November 11th, Veterans Day, at 3:30 PM, at the AMC Coral Ridge during the 20 th Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

The film narrates an inspiring story of friendship and compassion, portraying the relationship between Louis, a WWII veteran, (played by Mal Jones, who is a WWII veteran himself) and Dana (Theadra Taylor) a young and tormented artist who rents an art studio in Louis’ house.

The Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum helped the producers, providing advice and images to illustrate our character's past as a pilot. The film portrays a real soldier, Mr. Glen Grube, representing the main character as a young man in uniform. This Museum provided also photos of other WWII Glider pilots. 

The Veterans attending the screening will be honored as special guests at the event. They will be asked to stand, receive a round of applause and receive an appreciation card.

The Actor:

Mal Jones, an award-winning Floridian actor, is a WWII veteran. He has appeared in more than 20 feature films throughout his career, including "The Truman Show"(Paramount), "Cocoon II" and "Porky's II" (20th Century Fox.) In TV shows, Mal played Cal Clayburn in "Miami Vice" and Peterson, the unforgettable friend of the family in the MGM series "Flipper." He also appeared in CSI Miami, America's Most Wanted (as an actor of course) and Rescue 911. As a thespian, he has played the lead role in "Under the Yum Yum Tree" in the Ruth Forman Theater and "Remembering Oscar" in the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Mal has been a working actor for the past 40 years, and received the Bruce McLaughlin Lifetime Achievement Award, conferred by the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) for his inspired leadership and distinguished service.  

The Director:

The film was written, produced and directed by Emilia Anguita Huerta, president of Andromeda Productions, Inc. Emilia has directed dramatic programming for television, including prime time “novelas,” and has produced and directed shorts, documentaries, commercials and industrial films in Venezuela and the United States. She studied Fine Arts in her native Chile and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Screenwriting at the University of Miami. Emilia is the founder of the Chilean Film Festival of Miami, and is currently developing feature-length films for television.

Synopsis:

The deadline for an art contest and exhibition is rapidly approaching. With only a few short days to go, Dana, a painter in her late twenties, is faced with physical, emotional, and creative hurdles that leave her both hopeless and frustrated. Louis, a WWII veteran who rents a studio to Dana, tries desperately to offer his assistance, but to no avail. He suffers from Alzheimer’s and his ideas often escape from reality. An unexpected incident forces their lives to change drastically, taking Dana into a new dimension of life and art. It is only when she learns to open her heart that Dana is set free and her art can take flight.

“Red Bird” Sony sponsored Indie Film to premiere in Miami

MIAMI, FL (March 20 th, 2005) - “Red Bird” an Andromeda Productions short film will be premiering in Coral Gables on HD projection. This film is Emilia Anguita Huerta’s first English film and took her two years to complete. The screening will take place on April 8 th, 2005 at the AMC Cocowalk.

“Red Bird” is an inspirational film about life, about those things we take for granted until an unexpected event changes our paths. The production value in this film grabbed the attention of Ernie Leon from Sony and Vinny Hogan at Cineworks to join the project as the main sponsors for the screening. This project is truly the collaboration of the Florida production community. Shot in Super-16 sponsored by Kodak, the production had the support of Unique Producers Service, HD Suite and Sprockets Music, among others. Sony Electronics will provide a state-of-the-art HD projector for the screening.

The premiere of “Red Bird” gives us a great opportunity to watch a film completely produced in Florida with the highest quality standards and screened in HD. Andromeda Productions is an independent film production company which produces high quality, innovative commercials, documentaries and industrials for the American and Latin American markets.
